Ilocos Sur wage hike drive

Workers in Ilocos Sur are pressing for a daily wage increase of P90 to P190 as rising prices and disaster-related losses squeeze family finances. The proposed adjustment comes ahead of further regional hearings and a wage determination scheduled for Oct. 19-20.

Highlights

  • Ilocos Sur workers and labor groups called for a P112 increase to the current P505 daily minimum wage during the Oct. 8 Vigan City hearing.
  • The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board in Region 1 is consolidating stakeholder feedback from 107 participants and additional regional hearings before an Oct. 19-20 wage determination.
  • Proposed wage hikes in the Ilocos Region would raise household purchasing power but increase labor costs, as regulators balance worker welfare with business and economic data.

Regional hearings shape wage adjustment proposal

As reported by BusinessWorld Online, labor groups and workers raised calls for a higher daily minimum wage during an Oct. 8 public hearing in Vigan City, where household expenses, schooling costs and rent featured prominently in the discussion.

Labor representative Catherine Pangan outlined the difficulties workers face in coping with economic pressures while receiving what she described as meager wages. Emerito Sanchez, Jr., a bus worker from Pangasinan, proposed a P112 increase, saying the current P505 daily minimum wage does not cover basic family needs.

The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board in Region 1 and the Department of Labor and Employment in the Ilocos Region brought together 107 workers, employers and other stakeholders to discuss a possible wage adjustment. RTWPB-1 Chair and DoLE-1 Regional Director Honorina Dian-Baga said the board would weigh workers' concerns against economic data in setting wages.

Potential impact on the Ilocos labor market

The board is set to consolidate feedback from the Vigan and Pangasinan hearings before holding additional consultations in Ilocos Norte and La Union. That process is intended to broaden the regional basis for the wage review before a final determination on Oct. 19-20.

A higher minimum wage would affect both household purchasing power and labor costs across the Ilocos Region, where workers are arguing that current pay levels no longer match the cost of living. The hearings also highlight the balancing act for regulators as they assess worker welfare alongside business conditions and regional economic indicators.
