French police raid X offices in Paris amid expanding investigation
French police have raided the offices of Elon Musk’s social media platform X in Paris as part of a widening investigation into the company’s operations.
Highlights
- French police raided X’s Paris offices as part of an expanded probe into algorithms, AI systems and illegal content.
- Elon Musk and former CEO Linda Yaccarino were summoned for questioning as the investigation widened in mid-2025.
- The case highlights rising EU scrutiny of AI, content moderation and platform compliance under digital regulations.
The probe, which began more than a year ago, initially focused on alleged abuse of algorithms and fraudulent data extraction by X or its executives, reports Reuters.
Prosecutors said the investigation has now expanded following complaints related to the functioning of X’s AI chatbot, Grok. Authorities are examining whether the platform played a role in the detention or dissemination of illegal content, including sexually explicit deepfakes and images involving minors. The Paris prosecutor’s office said the aim of the investigation is to ensure the platform complies with French law while operating in the country. French cybercrime police are leading the operation with assistance from Europol.
Musk and former CEO summoned as scope of probe broadens
As part of the investigation, Elon Musk and former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino have been summoned to appear for questioning on April 20. Other X employees have also been called as witnesses, according to prosecutors. The cybercrime unit said the case was expanded in mid-2025 after reports of sexually explicit deepfakes and other prohibited content circulating on the platform.
Earlier complaints also alleged that biased algorithms may have distorted automated data processing systems. Prosecutors stressed that the inquiry remains ongoing and has not yet reached conclusions on potential liability. X has not issued a response following the latest raid, though it has previously rejected similar allegations.
Platform compliance and political tensions
X has previously described the investigation as politically motivated and an attack on free speech, with Musk denying claims that the platform manipulated its algorithms. French prosecutors said the investigation is being conducted within a “constructive approach” aimed at addressing compliance issues rather than targeting speech itself.
The prosecutor’s office also announced it will no longer use X for official communications, instead posting updates on LinkedIn and Instagram. That move underscores growing tensions between the platform and French authorities amid broader European scrutiny of digital platforms. Regulators across the EU have increased oversight of algorithmic transparency, AI systems and content moderation. The outcome of the French investigation could influence how X and similar platforms operate under European digital regulations going forward.
