UK phase 1 review timeline
As reported by Reuters, the Competition and Markets Authority said on Tuesday that it has formally begun reviewing the proposed transaction to assess whether it could reduce competition in an industry or region within the UK.The regulator's invitation to comment ran from April 13 to April 27, giving interested parties an opportunity to submit views on how the merger could affect competition. At the end of the first phase, the CMA will decide whether to approve the deal or refer it to a more detailed probe.
Regulatory pressure across media markets
Paramount outbid Netflix in February after a prolonged bidding contest for Warner Bros, in a move that would combine major studios and networks including CNN and CBS as the company seeks to compete more aggressively with streaming platforms. The proposed deal is already drawing scrutiny in North America and Europe, where writers, actors, filmmakers and cinema operators have raised concerns about possible effects on the entertainment industry and consumers. Last week, sources told Reuters that California, New York and other U.S. states were preparing a lawsuit to block the transaction.
Warner Bros and Paramount did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
