Citi hires Deutsche Bank banker to lead EMEA M&A
Citi reshapes EMEA M&A

Citi is reshaping its mergers and acquisitions leadership in Europe, the Middle East and Africa as it continues an investment banking hiring push under its newer leadership team. William Mansfield is set to join from Deutsche Bank in September, while the U.S. lender also promotes two existing senior dealmakers in the region.

Highlights

  • Citi appoints William Mansfield, Deutsche Bank's former head of EMEA M&A, as its new EMEA M&A head effective September 2024.
  • Robin Rousseau becomes global chair of M&A at Citi, and Barry Weir is promoted to vice chair, with both shifting strategic focus areas.
  • Citi's senior hiring, following Viswas Raghavan's 2024 arrival, signals a renewed push to strengthen EMEA investment banking and M&A advisory capabilities.

EMEA advisory leadership changes

As reported by Reuters, Citi names William Mansfield as head of M&A for the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, citing an internal memo confirmed by a Citi spokesperson. Mansfield currently serves as Deutsche Bank's head of EMEA M&A and previously held senior leadership roles at Credit Suisse.

He is based in London and will report to Citi global co-heads of M&A Guillermo Baygual and Drago Rajkovic when he joins in September. He replaces Robin Rousseau and Barry Weir, who previously jointly led the business for Citi in the region.

Rousseau, who joined Citi in 2020, is promoted to global chair of M&A and is focusing on European clients and cross-border situations. Weir is promoted to vice chair of M&A and is predominantly focusing on natural resources and UK clients and transactions.

Recruitment drive and Deutsche succession

The appointment extends Citi's recruitment drive since it brought in Viswas Raghavan from JPMorgan in 2024, underscoring the bank's effort to strengthen senior investment banking coverage and deal advisory in EMEA.

Deutsche Bank says in a separate memo that it confirms Mansfield's departure. Tobias Wagnert, currently head of investment banking coverage for EMEA excluding Germany, Switzerland and Austria, becomes head of EMEA M&A with immediate effect.

We also highlighted the MPC’s 7–2 vote split, with two members favoring an immediate hike while the majority stayed cautious despite shifting oil and inflation dynamics.
