Illinois supply agreement and contract timeline
As reported by Reuters, the agreement calls for Constellation Energy to supply power from its Dresden Clean Energy Center in Illinois to Walmart's previously announced high-tech perishable distribution center in Belvidere. The retailer will purchase electricity under two 15-year contracts. The total volume includes 30 megawatts of additional output expected from planned upgrades at the nuclear facility.
Clean power demand and plant investment impact
The deal is among the first between a major U.S. retailer and a nuclear energy provider, highlighting rising corporate interest in baseload clean power that can supply electricity around the clock. The arrangement supports investment in efficiency upgrades, or uprates, at the Dresden plant, allowing Constellation to raise output without building new generating capacity. Dresden is one of the company's largest nuclear plants and is licensed to operate through 2049 and 2051.
