Highlights

  • British American Tobacco trades below short- and medium-term averages, indicating persistent seller pressure despite long-term support above GBX4,326.
  • Momentum indicators signal a prevailing bearish bias, with oversold readings and downside momentum dominating intraday sessions.
  • Expected five-day trading range is GBX4,425–GBX4,613, with a 68% probability of a downward move and key breakout levels at GBX4,551 and GBX4,501.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, views the recent price rebound in British American Tobacco as fragile. He notes that the stock remains under pressure below its short- and medium-term moving averages, while most momentum indicators register oversold or negative readings. The absence of any supportive news further weakens confidence and suggests market sentiment is fragile. Kharitonov highlights the dominance of seller bias and believes the prevailing downside momentum is not yet exhausted. "Without a shift in technical structure or positive catalysts, any gains look vulnerable to quick reversal," says Kharitonov.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees long-term opportunity in BATS despite near-term headwinds. He emphasizes the bullish structure that remains valid above the 200-day moving average and notes late-session buying as a sign of underlying demand. Karapetjanc finds the oversold technicals may soon attract rotation from value-oriented investors. He believes the market offers multiple setups, with further growth expected if resistance is cleared. "With bullish structure intact and volatility elevated, I expect institutional flows to drive a breakout above GBX4,551," says Karapetjanc.

Short-term seller dominance builds as long-term support holds

British American Tobacco is trading below its 20-day (GBX4,551) and 50-day (GBX4,590) moving averages, but remains above the 200-day (GBX4,326), reflecting short- and medium-term seller pressure with sustained long-term support. The nearest resistance is seen at GBX4,551, with GBX4,501 as support. Structure remains bullish in the longer-term given the alignment of the 50-day versus the 200-day moving average. Momentum is weak, with both the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) and Average Directional Index (ADX) signaling a selling bias. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is at 40.06, indicating a sell signal, while the Stochastic RSI, Commodity Channel Index (CCI), and Bull/Bear Power (BBP) all point to oversold conditions. The Awesome Oscillator (AO) is also negative, supporting the prevailing downside momentum. Intraday volatility reached 2.98% as the stock gained GBX129 to close near the session’s high, signaling late-session buying activity despite underlying weakness from most momentum indicators.

Earlier, analysts noted that persistent technical headwinds continued to weigh on British American Tobacco, with downside risks prevailing despite occasional intraday rebounds. The latest trading session reinforces this cautious outlook, highlighting the importance of monitoring whether renewed buying activity can overcome prevailing weakness or if sellers will push the stock below key downside triggers in the days ahead.
