Thunder design and deployment plan

As first reported by Financial Times, Anduril is expanding into helicopter strike drones with a system designed to fly ahead of or alongside crewed aircraft on missions deep behind enemy lines. The company unveils a full-size replica of Thunder on the opening day of the Farnborough Airshow, presenting a drone that lifts off vertically like a helicopter before transitioning to fixed-wing flight and uses a hybrid-electric engine.

Anduril develops the system with U.S. air-taxi start-up Archer Aviation, while UK-based GKN Aerospace also joins the programme. Archer says it plans to field a commercial variant and will announce its first customers later this week.

Rich Drake, general manager of Anduril UK, says recent conflicts, particularly Ukraine, underline the vulnerability of attack helicopters as drones and man-portable air defence systems raise risks for crews. He says the concept is for each attack helicopter, such as an Apache, to operate with three to six Thunder drones to add combat mass and extend effects across a wider area.

Shane Arnott, senior vice-president of programmes and engineering at Anduril, says Archer's involvement, including the hybrid-electric propulsion system, helps reduce costs so the platform can be deployed at scale. He adds that the aim is for Thunder to cost only a small fraction of an Apache, with a first flight planned next year.

UK competition and defence market impact

Demand for autonomous military systems is rising as the war in Ukraine pushes armed forces to expand uncrewed capabilities across their fleets. That trend is shaping procurement programmes in the UK, where Anduril is among four companies selected by the Ministry of Defence for Project Nyx, a programme to develop drones that fly alongside Apache helicopters.

Anduril is competing against BAE Systems, the UK arm of Thales and drone company Tekever. The Ministry of Defence is expected to announce a winner later in the autumn, and the first system is hoped to enter service by 2030, while a similar effort is also being developed for the Royal Navy's Wildcat helicopters.

Although Anduril declines to comment on the Nyx competition directly, it says the drones could be built in the UK and the country could serve as an export base. The company adds that a final manufacturing decision depends on which government launches a programme first, and says it is also involved in other competitions that are not yet public.
