AI platform launch as selling pressure limits upside

Earlier this month, BMO Insurance launched SmartDecision, an AI-enhanced underwriting platform that delivers real-time life insurance decisions for eligible applications up to $5 million, according to Simplywall. By automating and accelerating the underwriting process, BMO can enhance the efficiency of policy approvals and expand its potential customer base in the individual life segment. While this innovation signals investment in technology-driven offerings, price action has remained under broader selling pressure.

Divergent momentum amid resistance at technical boundary

Technically, BMO is trading below its MA-20 and MA-50 but above its MA-200 on the daily chart. The Ichimoku Kijun level at C$255.44 acts as immediate resistance. Momentum signals are mixed: MACD is showing a strong buy, but ADX, RSI (46.58), and CCI all indicate selling pressure, while Stochastic RSI is oversold. Bull/Bear Power is classified as overbought, highlighting intraday buyer strength even as prices closed near today's low and on moderate volatility, reflecting a divergence between MACD and other momentum signals.

Sideways outlook as volatility bands define risk

In the short term, BMO's price is expected to trade between C$249.83 and C$255.34, reflecting a typical volatility band relative to current levels. The probability of further downside is slightly higher at 52%, while the chance of an upward move stands at 48%. The baseline scenario calls for a sideways trading pattern within this range. Should bullish momentum emerge and push the price above C$255.44, there is potential for further gains, whereas a break below C$249.83 could accelerate losses.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees BMO’s adoption of AI-driven underwriting as a meaningful step, but highlights that price action remains technically weak. He notes the stock trades below short- and medium-term moving averages, with mixed momentum signals and slightly higher downside probabilities. In his view, the baseline is for sideways movement unless key resistance at C$255.44 is reclaimed. "Despite positive news on innovation, I remain cautious until the price sustainably moves above C$255.44," he says.

Earlier, analysts noted that Bank of Montreal maintained a constructive technical outlook supported by resilient price action and consistent buyer interest. However, with BMO now trading below key short- and medium-term moving averages despite ongoing innovation in its insurance business, investors should monitor whether the stock can reclaim C$255.44 in the near term as a potential signal of renewed bullish momentum.
