Canada backs Saskatchewan agriculture

Federal funding targets processing and innovation

As announced by the Government of Canada and reported by Government of Canada, more than $10 million is being committed through PrairiesCan to support nine projects involving businesses and other organizations in Saskatchewan. Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State for Rural Development, made the announcement on behalf of Eleanor Olszewski, the minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada, alongside International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu.

The investment includes support for organizations such as the Global Agri-Food Advancement Partnership, the Global Institute for Food Security and the Prairie Agriculture Machinery Institute. These groups are set to help companies develop new products across the agriculture sector and build capacity for new and increased production aimed at import and export markets.

POS Biosciences Corp. and Bioriginal Food & Science Corp. are also part of the package, with funding intended to modernize and expand processing and packaging infrastructure. The upgrades are meant to improve the extraction and delivery of high-value nutrients and specialty products and widen access to Made-in-Canada ingredients for business buyers and consumers.

Expansion plans support livestock and regional market growth

In Saskatchewan's livestock industry, North 49 Foods Ltd. is set to benefit from an expansion designed to lift production and support the development of new export markets. Prairie Meats Inc. is also receiving support for upgrades that will allow it to manufacture food to a high regulated standard for distribution across Saskatchewan and the rest of Canada.

The announcement reflects Ottawa's broader effort to strengthen the prairie agriculture economy as global demand and trade conditions evolve. By directing funding toward innovation, processing capacity and market access, the program is intended to improve the sector's ability to compete more quickly in both Canadian and international markets.
