CME Group to launch smaller equity index futures for U.S. retail access
CME unveils E-nano futures

CME Group is widening its smaller-sized derivatives lineup with a planned August 24 launch of E-nano equity index futures, subject to regulatory review. The contracts are set at one-tenth the size of Micro E-mini futures and target trading exposure to the S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Russell 2000 and Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Highlights

  • CME Group will launch E-nano equity index futures covering S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Russell 2000, and Dow Jones Industrial Average on August 24, pending regulatory review.
  • The nano-sized contracts target both institutional and retail investors by lowering entry costs and providing finer risk management than existing products.
  • About 4.5 billion Micro E-mini futures have traded since May 2019, reflecting growing demand for smaller-sized U.S. equity index futures amid record market participation.

Launch terms and contract scope

As announced by CME Group, the new E-nano equity index futures are intended for both institutional and retail investors seeking more precise exposure to major U.S. stock benchmarks. The contracts allow market participants to trade views on the S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Russell 2000 and Dow Jones Industrial Average for 23 hours a day, while adding finer risk management flexibility than larger products.

Tim McCourt, global head of equities, FX and alternative products at CME Group, says higher equity markets are raising the barrier to entry for retail investors and increasing demand for smaller, more cost-efficient instruments. He says the nano-sized contracts are designed to help clients hedge portfolios with greater granularity within CME Group's existing trading infrastructure and centralized liquidity.

Under the plan, the contracts will be listed on and subject to the rules of CME and CBOT. The launch is scheduled for August 24, pending regulatory review.

Retail brokerage push and market impact

Brokerage partners frame the product as a way to broaden access to U.S. equity futures as benchmark indexes remain near record highs. Martin Franchi, chief executive of NinjaTrader Group, says the smaller contracts could extend the benefits of futures, including capital efficiency, margin offsets and near round-the-clock access to macro-event trading, to more investors.

Robinhood also positions the launch as part of a wider retail access strategy. JB Mackenzie, vice president and general manager of futures and prediction markets at Robinhood, says some traders are being priced out of existing futures products and that the reduced contract size should make benchmark trading easier for customers.

CME Group says about 4.5 billion Micro E-mini futures have traded since that product line launched in May 2019. The exchange says demand for smaller-sized equity index futures has grown in recent years, supporting record levels of volume and participation in the complex.
