Digital exchanges, brokerages gain as SEC opens path for tokenized stock trading
SEC boosts tokenized stocks

Regulatory support for tokenized equities is lifting crypto-linked financial stocks and renewing expectations for broader blockchain use in capital markets. The move arrives after the Clarity Act stalls in Congress, giving Wall Street a narrower but still meaningful opening for new digital-asset business models.

Highlights

  • SEC creates a temporary regulatory path for tokenized stocks, triggering sharp gains in Robinhood (+7%), Coinbase (+10%), and Strategy (+12%) on Friday.
  • Citi and LSE analysts highlight benefits of tokenized stocks, including lower minimum investments, global access, fractional ownership, and more direct integration with algorithmic trading.
  • Compass Point notes Bullish could realize $300 million in revenue from cross-selling tokenization services to 10% of Equiniti's 3,000 clients following its acquisition.

SEC exemption lifts tokenization outlook

As reported by CNBC, the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday creates a temporary regulatory path for certain entities to issue tokenized stocks, or blockchain-based versions of traditional shares. The change drives sharp moves in related stocks on Friday morning, with Robinhood rising more than 7%, while Coinbase and Strategy gain 10% and 12%, respectively.

Peter Christiansen, analyst at Citi, says the benefits go beyond faster settlement and argues tokenization can reshape how securities are issued, owned, transferred, financed and distributed across global capital markets. He adds that institutional investors, asset managers, brokers and retail shareholders could benefit, with lower minimum investment sizes, broader global access to U.S. securities and fractional ownership among the possible advantages.

The rule change follows the failure of the Clarity Act to advance in Congress this week. That bill would have allowed some stablecoins to generate interest, potentially drawing deposits away from banks, so the SEC action and a similar Commodity Futures Trading Commission measure restricting enforcement on access to digital assets are seen as a more limited alternative for the crypto industry.

Exchanges and platforms seen as key beneficiaries

Tokenized stocks can be integrated into trading algorithms more directly than some conventional securities, potentially increasing the value of exchanges and platforms that support programmable trading. The London School of Economics notes that 60% to 70% of stock trading is already carried out algorithmically, underscoring why the SEC's so-called innovation exemption is drawing attention across market infrastructure providers.

Ed Engel, analyst at Compass Point, says Bullish is the leading beneficiary because its pending acquisition of Equiniti, the No. 2 transfer agent, could help it cross-sell tokenization services including automated market maker liquidity. He says those liquidity services are seven-figure deals and imply about a $300 million revenue opportunity if Bullish cross-sells to 10% of Equiniti's 3,000 customers.

Other companies Engel identifies as potential beneficiaries include Robinhood, Coinbase, Circle Internet, BitGo, Exodus Movement and DeFi Technologies. Morgan Stanley also favors Robinhood, Coinbase and Gemini Space Station as firms positioned to benefit as regulators continue removing barriers to digital-asset activity without broader legislation.

Our earlier article on Robinhood’s platform expansion outlined how the company is moving beyond commission-free stock trading into banking, credit, crypto, prediction markets, and AI-driven investing tools. It highlighted fast growth in funded customers and platform assets, plus rising contributions from deposits, credit card revenue, and high-volume event-contract trading—signaling a broader push to capture more of each customer’s financial activity.
