Diplomatic agenda for New York meetings
As announced by Canada.ca, Anand is joining Canada’s delegation to the UN General Assembly High-Level Week in New York City, where she is scheduled to lead and take part in a series of events focused on geopolitical coordination and coalition building. Her program includes talks with G7 counterparts on current geopolitical issues and a foreign ministers’ meeting on maritime security that Canada and partners are co-hosting. That session is intended to deepen international cooperation on a cross-regional priority and support the goals set out in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Declaration on Maritime Security and Prosperity.
Anand is also attending a meeting on Sudan aimed at strengthening international coordination for conflict de-escalation and inter-Sudanese political dialogue. In addition, she is meeting Nordic-Baltic Eight counterparts to co-host discussions on closer NB8-Canada cooperation and continued support for Ukraine.
Canada links diplomacy to sovereignty and security
Canada is also using the week to reinforce its position on several active international crises. Anand is attending the Sixth Summit of the International Crimea Platform, where Canada is reaffirming its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. She is also participating in a ministerial event focused on the protection of civilians in conflict, as humanitarian needs rise and respect for international humanitarian law comes under pressure. Anand is then joining Carney at a leader-level event that Canada is co-hosting on the two-state solution and the Gaza Peace Plan.
The minister is concluding her engagement on September 26 by delivering Canada’s national statement to the UN General Assembly. That address is set to outline the government’s foreign policy priorities and its approach to key geopolitical issues.
Canada–EU talks on a deeper strategic partnership have focused on practical co-operation rather than the politically sensitive “associate member” label, as we previously reported. Our earlier article highlighted sector-by-sector integration spanning defence, digital trade, critical raw materials, research and technology, alongside efforts to reduce trade frictions and strengthen economic security.
