Taiwan export orders reach record high in August on AI demand
AI drives record exports

Taiwan's export orders climb to a record monthly value in August as artificial intelligence demand keeps accelerating across the island's semiconductor and technology supply chain. The total exceeds $100 billion for the first time, reinforcing Taiwan's role as a key barometer for global tech spending.

Highlights

  • Taiwan's August export orders surge 71.4% year-on-year to $103.0 billion, surpassing $100 billion for the first time and beating expectations of 63.6%.
  • Strongest gains in August come from telecoms products up 100.5% and electronic products up 83.9%, driven by AI and high-performance computing demand.
  • Export orders from the U.S. rise 88.9%, Europe 58.2%, and China 47.7%, reflecting Taiwan's key role in the semiconductor supply chain despite ongoing geopolitical risks.

August orders surge past $100 billion

As reported by Reuters, citing Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs, export orders in August rise 71.4% from a year earlier to $103.0 billion, the first time the monthly total passes the $100 billion mark. The result is above analysts' expectations for a 63.6% gain and extends the current streak of annual increases to 19 straight months.

July export orders jump 61.9% from a year earlier. The ministry says the August increase is driven by fast-rising demand for AI, high-performance computing and cloud service applications.

Taiwan, home to TSMC and other major technology companies, is widely watched because orders for its goods serve as a bellwether for global technology demand. For September, the ministry expects export orders to rise between 50.7% and 55.1% from a year earlier, while full-year orders could reach $1.1 trillion.

Semiconductor supply chain supports outlook

The strongest category gains in August come from telecoms products, which rise 100.5% from a year earlier, and electronic products, which increase 83.9%. By market, orders from the U.S. soar 88.9%, matching the previous month's pace, while orders from Europe rise 58.2% and those from Japan increase 41.1%.

Orders from China grow 47.7%, close to July's 47.2% expansion. The ministry says geopolitical risks and trade policies continue to weigh on global economic growth, but Taiwan's core position in the semiconductor and server supply chain supports stable growth momentum for orders.

Our earlier article on Taiwan’s Taiex hitting a fresh intraday record described how heavyweight tech names such as TSMC helped lift the index amid renewed AI optimism. We also noted that Taiwan’s market is heavily dominated by semiconductors and advanced-chip production, making local performance closely tied to global AI-related hardware demand expectations.
