7-Eleven store closures in India signal retail strategy reset
7-Eleven exits India stores

After shutting all 31 of its Indian outlets at the end of September, 7-Eleven says it still wants a long-term presence in the country. The move highlights mounting pressure on the convenience store model in India, where quick-delivery apps and larger retailers are intensifying competition.

Highlights

  • Reliance Retail closed all 31 7-Eleven stores in India at the end of September, triggering a reassessment of 7-Eleven's long-term strategy in the market.
  • 7-India Convenience Retail posted a net loss of nearly 900 million rupees ($9.3 million) for the year ended March 2026, with losses widening steadily since March 2022.
  • Analysts attribute closures to structural issues facing small-format stores in India—high rents, staffing costs, competition from larger outlets and quick-delivery apps—calling for a shift from the failing franchise model.

Franchise closure reshapes India expansion plans

As first reported by CNBC, Reliance Retail, the master franchise operator for 7-Eleven in India, closed all 31 stores nationwide at the end of September. A spokesperson for the Japanese chain said by email that the company still aims to serve customers in India and is exploring several options to build its presence in the market over the long term.

The spokesperson did not comment further on Reliance Retail's business decisions or on the status of the agreement between the Japanese and Indian companies. Reliance Retail, owned by Reliance Industries billionaire Mukesh Ambani, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

7-Eleven and Reliance Retail announced their partnership in 2021 after the Japanese company ended an earlier arrangement with Future Retail. Future Retail said in a regulatory disclosure at the time that the termination was mutual because it was unable to meet store-opening targets and franchise fee payments.

India convenience market pressures weigh on model

Analysts say the closures indicate an operational reset rather than a withdrawal from India, especially as rival Japanese chain Lawsons is also planning an entry into the market. Sohrab Bararia, a partner at Grant Thornton Bharat, told CNBC that 7-Eleven does not appear to be giving up on India and is more likely reconsidering the current franchise structure after losses under the existing model.

7-India Convenience Retail, a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Retail that signed the master franchise agreement in 2021, reported a net loss of nearly 900 million rupees, or $9.3 million, for the year ended March 2026 on revenue of about 920 million rupees. According to Tracxn data cited in the report, losses have widened steadily from 52 million rupees in the financial year ended March 2022.

Industry specialists say small-format convenience stores face structural challenges in India because larger outlets can offer lower prices and broader assortments, while 10-minute grocery delivery apps are attracting urban consumers with wider selection and convenience. Bharat Birla, executive director at Anand Rathi Investment Banking, said such stores carry high rents and full staffing costs but generate relatively low sales per outlet.

Even so, analysts say Japanese operators may still find room in India's crowded retail market if they move beyond a traditional grocery-led format. A shift away from the franchise approach that has now failed twice could give 7-Eleven more strategic control while allowing greater localization and a broader route to scale.

In our earlier report on Tata Consultancy Services withholding quarterly variable pay for some senior staff, we noted the move came after the company missed internal performance targets in the September quarter. We also highlighted how softer demand conditions and policy-driven uncertainty were adding pressure across India’s IT services sector, even as AI-related revenue remained a relative bright spot.
