CME Group corn futures set volume record after USDA outlook shift
Corn futures volume record

Heightened volatility in U.S. grain markets is driving heavier use of risk-management tools as traders respond to changing crop expectations. CME Group says its Corn futures post a new daily volume record of 1,206,376 contracts on October 9, topping the previous high set in March 2019.

Highlights

  • CME Group corn futures set a new daily volume record after the USDA report showed ending stocks, yields, and production above expectations.
  • CME Group's agriculture franchise posted an average daily volume of 2,022,488 contracts in Q3, up 18.1% year over year.
  • Corn futures' average daily volume in Q3 rose 35.2% to 502,004 contracts, and corn options volume climbed 31.4% to 179,674 contracts.

Record trading follows USDA surprise

As reported by CME Group, the spike in activity comes after last week's USDA report prompted market participants to reposition quickly in corn markets. John Ricci, Global Head of Agricultural Products at CME Group, says traders had expected lower yields after a difficult summer, but the report showed ending stocks, yields and production all above expectations.

Ricci says the shift in market conditions highlights continued demand for futures contracts as clients seek to manage price risk. The new daily record surpasses the previous peak of 1,128,597 contracts traded on March 29, 2019.

Agriculture franchise shows broader growth

CME Group says its agriculture business reaches an average daily volume of 2,022,488 contracts in the third quarter, up 18.1% from a year earlier. In September, average daily volume reaches 1,936,761 contracts, an increase of 28.8% year over year.

Within that business, Corn futures reach an average daily volume of 502,004 contracts in the third quarter, up 35.2% from a year earlier, while Corn options reach 179,674 contracts, up 31.4%. The figures point to stronger trading demand across agricultural derivatives as market participants respond to supply and pricing uncertainty.
