NTT Data nears deal to build Anthropic data centre in Japan
NTT Data’s AI leap

Japan's push to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure is advancing as NTT Data Group moves toward an agreement to develop Anthropic's first dedicated data centre in the country. The planned facility in Osaka could cost as much as 1 trillion yen and begin partial operations as early as 2028, highlighting the scale of computing demand tied to AI growth.

Highlights

  • NTT Data Group is finalizing talks with Anthropic to build a data centre in Osaka with up to 500 megawatts capacity and construction costs possibly reaching 1 trillion yen ($6.3 billion).
  • The agreement between NTT Data and Anthropic is targeted for signing by the end of fiscal 2026, with partial operations expected to start as early as 2028.
  • This facility would be Anthropic's first dedicated site in Japan, reflecting growing demand for large-scale AI-supporting data centres and significant investment in Japan's AI infrastructure.

Osaka project timeline and scale

As reported by Reuters, citing Nikkei, NTT Data Group is in the final stages of talks to build the Osaka data centre for U.S. AI company Anthropic, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The report says the facility is set to become Anthropic's first dedicated site in Japan and would have power intake capacity of up to 500 megawatts. Construction costs could reach as much as 1 trillion yen, or about $6.3 billion.

NTT Data and Anthropic are aiming to sign an agreement by the end of fiscal 2026, which ends on March 31. Partial operations are scheduled to start as early as 2028.

AI infrastructure implications for Japan

The project points to rising demand for large-scale data centre capacity in Japan as global AI companies seek local computing infrastructure. A facility of this size would rank among the more significant digital infrastructure investments tied to the country's AI sector.

NTT declined to comment on the report, while NTT Group was not immediately available for comment. If completed, the Osaka site would deepen Japan's role in supporting advanced AI workloads and related cloud infrastructure.

Our earlier coverage of Anthropic’s $100 million training initiative explained how the company plans to train 10,000 “Frontier Deployed Engineers” by the end of 2027 to help enterprises implement Claude in real workflows. The program combines short on-site intensives with longer workplace residencies, aiming to close the AI skills gap and accelerate practical, large-scale deployment of Anthropic’s tools.
