ETFs reach record popularity with 16.9 million U.S. investors
Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) are at the height of their popularity. According to data from the Investment Company Institute and the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2024, 16.9 million U.S. households owned ETF shares.
Just two decades ago, ETFs were primarily accessible to institutional traders and experienced investors. Today, thanks to user-friendly retail platforms like Robinhood, Fidelity, and Charles Schwab, ETFs have become an essential part of personal finance — allowing households to access stocks, bonds, and even crypto-related sectors at minimal cost.
Between 2016 and 2020, ETF adoption accelerated sharply, coinciding with the boom in retail trading and the rise of zero-commission investing.
After 2020, market volatility during the pandemic era and the stimulus-driven savings surge pushed millions of new investors toward ETFs in search of stability and long-term growth.

Currently, ETF ownership among U.S. households has climbed to nearly 13%, compared to about 4% in 2012. This growth reflects both rising financial literacy and increasing trust in passive investment strategies.
ETFs are here to stay
Several key factors continue to support the dominance of ETFs over mutual funds, including lower fees and greater liquidity.ETFs trade on exchanges just like stocks, allowing investors to buy and sell in real time.
Another advantage is diversification: ETFs give investors access to a broad range of sectors without requiring deep expertise in stock selection — from the S&P 500 index to niche areas like artificial intelligence, green energy, and cryptocurrencies.
Analysts predict that by 2030, ETF ownership could surpass 20% of all U.S. households. The next wave of growth may be driven by tokenized ETFs, fractional investing, and the expansion of Bitcoin- and Ethereum-based funds, attracting a new generation of digital investors.
