UK government backs Northern Olympics feasibility study with £7 million
Northern Olympics bid boost

The UK government is stepping up plans to explore a future Northern Olympic and Paralympic bid, allocating £7 million in this week’s Budget for a full feasibility study. The funding moves the proposal beyond an initial strategic assessment and puts economic regeneration, transport and venue planning at the centre of the next phase.

Highlights

  • UK government allocates £7 million for a feasibility study into hosting a distributed Olympic and Paralympic Games across the North of England.
  • The study, part of the Northern Growth Strategy, aims to assess venue needs, transport, regional cost-benefit, and potential for economic and infrastructure development.
  • Officials position the Northern Games as a catalyst for nationwide economic gains, leveraging recent major event wins like UEFA EURO 2028 to reinforce UK hosting capabilities.

Feasibility study and bid planning

As reported by GOV.UK, the government has confirmed a £7 million cash injection to examine how a future Olympic and Paralympic Games hosted across the North of England could work in practice. The next stage includes a full feasibility study covering venue requirements, transport links, how events could be distributed across the region, and the likely costs and benefits for local communities.

The proposal follows an initial strategic assessment by UK Sport, announced in May, which allowed the concept of a Northern Games to move forward. The next phase is being developed in partnership between the government, UK Sport, Northern mayors, and the British Olympic and Paralympic Associations, which would ultimately be responsible for any formal bid.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the Games could help unite the country and spread the experience beyond a single host city. Chancellor John Healey said the government is accelerating work on a possible bid, pointing to London 2012 as evidence that the UK can host an event on that scale.

Regional growth and national impact

The government says a Northern Games could support wider plans to regenerate towns and cities, with ministers linking the project to the Northern Growth Strategy. That agenda includes investment in transport connections, housing, public spaces and grassroots sport, with the Games presented as a potential catalyst for broader infrastructure and community development.

Officials also argue that hosting major sporting events can strengthen economic growth, improve pride in place and enhance the UK’s international profile. The government says the benefits would extend beyond the North, with communities across the country able to participate through sport, culture and related activity.

The UK has already secured a pipeline of major events, including UEFA EURO 2028 and upcoming Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes Grand Départs across England, Scotland and Wales. Ministers say that record underlines the country’s capacity to stage large international competitions while building momentum behind a possible return of the Olympics and Paralympics to the UK for the first time since London 2012.
