Michigan cost pressures shape U.S. midterm voter sentiment
Michigan costs sway voters

Households and small businesses in Michigan are facing sustained pressure from higher prices for coffee, fuel and other essentials as the U.S. midterm elections approach. In Lansing and the surrounding battleground district, voters say rising living costs are affecting spending decisions, business margins and views of the current government.

Highlights

  • Local businesses in Lansing face shipping and coffee cost increases of 50% and at least 30% respectively due to higher fuel prices and tariffs since Trump's election.
  • Petrol prices in Michigan hover around U.S.$4.30 per gallon, approximately U.S.$1 above the 2025 average, straining households and influencing voter sentiment ahead of midterms.
  • Tariffs and policy uncertainty raise packaging, shipping, and equipment costs for small businesses, eroding margins and prompting owners and employees to seek additional jobs.

Price rises hit consumers and small businesses

As reported by ABC News, residents and business owners in Lansing say higher costs are reshaping daily spending as the election nears. Delivery driver Nicholas Kolacz says a weekly coffee now costs about U.S.$10 after a tip, leading him to cut visits to a local cafe from several times a week to once on Sundays.

Hob Nob cafe owner Trisha Kosloski says her business is under pressure from higher shipping bills and more expensive coffee beans. She says delivery costs have climbed about 50% as shippers pass on fuel expenses, while coffee prices jumped after President Donald Trump announced tariffs on several coffee-producing countries following his election.

Kosloski says the first round of tariffs lifted her coffee costs by at least 30%, and prices did not fall much even after those tariffs were ruled unconstitutional. She also says tariffs announced in July on goods from Canada have affected the coffee trade because many beans roasted for the U.S. market are processed there before re-entering the country.

She says the squeeze has eroded profit margins and forced tougher choices for owners and staff. According to her account, she has taken a second job and many employees now also work additional jobs to cope with the higher cost base.

Fuel costs weigh on voting mood in battleground Michigan

Petrol prices are also becoming a central financial issue for voters in Michigan, where long driving distances make fuel a routine household expense. The report says gasoline is hovering around U.S.$4.30 a gallon, roughly U.S.$1 above the 2025 average, with weekly prices rising markedly since the start of the war in Iran.

Michigan State University student Samson Sprague says he no longer fills his tank completely, instead buying U.S.$10 or U.S.$15 at a time. Parents visiting students and small business operators describe similar strains, with Tara Lukaart saying higher fuel bills are a significant burden for her husband's plumbing business, which operates several trucks.

Some voters say the pressure is feeding a desire for political change, while others remain disengaged. Lansing sits in Michigan's Seventh Congressional District, a competitive seat held by a Republican incumbent, and cost-of-living concerns could influence support for Democratic candidate Will Lawrence if frustration translates into turnout.

Business owner Josh Mayo says tariffs and policy uncertainty are raising packaging, shipping and equipment costs, and in some cases disrupting imports at the border. While he supports the goal of reviving U.S. manufacturing, he says a gradual rollout would have been less damaging than abrupt changes that can alter business conditions overnight.

In our earlier article on the spike in crude oil shipping costs, we explained how conflict-related risks on major tanker routes have driven freight and insurance rates sharply higher. We noted that when transport costs jump, they can feed directly into higher gasoline prices and then ripple through to everyday goods via more expensive logistics and supply chains.
