Leverage Shares rebalances Moderna

Leverage Shares has carried out an intraday rebalance for its 3x Long Moderna exchange-traded product after Moderna shares fell sharply enough to breach the product's index threshold on Oct. 22. The move resets the ETP's value mechanics after the underlying stock dropped 16.70% from its previous close, activating protections set out in the index methodology and prospectus.

Highlights

  • Leverage Shares triggered an intraday rebalance for its 3x Long Moderna ETP (ISIN XS3005160091) at 12:41:02 EST on Oct. 22 after Moderna shares fell to $204.75, breaching the -16.67% threshold.
  • Moderna's 16.70% price drop from $245.81 to $204.75 activated the index and ETP rebalance, resulting in an average price of $199.17361 and a rebalanced ETP value of $91.19607.
  • The automatic intraday risk-control mechanism amplified the impact for ETP holders with three-times leveraged exposure, emphasizing significant gain or loss potential during sharp market moves.

Rebalance triggered by Moderna share drop

As reported by London Stock Exchange, citing RNS, Leverage Shares plc says the intraday rebalance is triggered at 12:41:02 EST on Oct. 22, when Moderna Inc. shares trade at $204.75 and cross the -16.67% threshold defined in the iSTOXX Leveraged 3x MRNA Index methodology.

The notice covers the Leverage Shares 3x Long Moderna ETP, identified by ISIN XS3005160091. Leverage Shares says the trigger value represents a 16.70% decline from Moderna's previous closing price of $245.81, causing an intraday rebalance of both the index and the linked ETP securities.

Starting five minutes after the trigger time, the issuer carries out the rebalance over the following 10-minute period using the trigger value as the reference point. The process results in an average price of $199.17361 and sets a rebalanced ETP security value of $91.19607.

Implications for ETP holders and leveraged products

The notice underlines the automatic nature of risk controls embedded in leveraged exchange-traded products, which are designed to respond when the underlying reference asset moves sharply during the trading session. In this case, the reset affects investors in a product offering three-times long exposure to Moderna shares, amplifying both gains and losses.

Leverage Shares says terms not defined in the notice keep the meanings assigned in the prospectuses for the securities. The issuer also urges any holders with questions arising from the notice to contact the company directly, while the announcement states that holders uncertain about any action should consult independent professional advisers.
