MIAX eyes binary options

Miami International Holdings is moving to expand its proprietary options lineup with new cash-settled binary contracts on its SEC-registered exchanges. The proposal covers products linked to Bloomberg equity indices and to company-reported key performance indicators, with the first launch step subject to regulatory review.

Highlights

  • MIAX Options submitted rule filings to the SEC to list cash-settled binary index options and KPI-linked binary options across its exchanges.
  • MIAX plans to launch binary index options tied to the Bloomberg 500 Index and Bloomberg 100 Index in 2027, pending SEC review and operational readiness.
  • KPI binary options will offer exposure to company-reported metrics from SEC filings, with launch timing contingent on regulatory and operational approval.

Regulatory filing outlines new product plan

As reported by MIAX Global, citing MIAX, MIAX Options has submitted proposed rule filings to the Securities and Exchange Commission to list cash-settled binary index options and KPI-linked binary options on one or more of its SEC-registered exchanges. The filings represent the first formal step toward bringing the products to customers in its exchange network.

Thomas P. Gallagher, chairman and chief executive officer of MIAX, says investors are increasingly seeking event-driven exposure, whether tied to where a benchmark closes or to whether a company meets a specified performance metric. He says linking binary contracts to MIAX's Bloomberg index franchise and to company-reported KPIs is part of the group's broader effort to build out proprietary offerings.

The planned binary index options are designed to let market participants take a position on whether a broad-based benchmark, including the Bloomberg 500 Index or Bloomberg 100 Index, finishes above or below a stated level at expiration. Subject to SEC review and operational readiness, MIAX plans to launch those products in 2027, with clearing and settlement handled by The Options Clearing Corporation.

The KPI binary options are intended to give investors exposure to objective figures disclosed in a public company's SEC filings, such as revenue, earnings per share, or another reported operating metric, measured against a preset threshold. MIAX says the launch timeline for those contracts will be announced later and will also depend on regulatory, operational, and clearing readiness.

Potential impact on U.S. options markets

Binary options are classified by the SEC as security options, which places them under the same regulatory framework and customer protections as traditional U.S.-listed options. MIAX says that structure supports transparent pricing, institutional-grade liquidity, and formal market oversight.

For the U.S. listed-options sector, the move signals an attempt to broaden exchange-traded event-driven products beyond conventional index and equity contracts. If approved, the filings could open a new product channel for investors looking for defined-outcome exposure tied either to benchmark levels or to company operating results.

In our earlier SPX outlook, we tracked the S&P 500 holding above key moving averages even as tech earnings—led by Meta’s negative free cash flow—sparked a risk-off rotation into Treasuries. We noted mixed momentum signals and elevated downside risk, with the index likely to consolidate within a defined near-term trading band rather than resume a clean rally.
