DBS third-quarter profit falls on weaker trading income in Singapore
DBS profits dip on weak trading

Singapore's largest bank reports lower third-quarter earnings as softer markets trading income weighs on results. The lender's net profit misses analyst expectations, with July-September earnings coming in below the LSEG consensus estimate.

Highlights

  • DBS reports third-quarter net profit of S$2.81 billion, down 5% year-on-year from S$2.95 billion, citing weaker trading income.
  • DBS's Q3 profit falls short of the S$2.90 billion analyst consensus based on LSEG data, signaling a negative earnings surprise.
  • As Singapore's largest bank, DBS's earnings miss highlights ongoing pressure on trading-related income despite attention to regional banking sector resilience.

Quarterly earnings and forecast miss

As reported by Reuters, DBS says net profit for the July-September period falls 5% from a year earlier to S$2.81 billion, from S$2.95 billion. The bank attributes the decline mainly to weaker markets trading income.

The result comes in below the mean analyst estimate of S$2.90 billion from four analysts, according to LSEG data.

Implications for Singapore banking

DBS is Singapore's biggest bank and Southeast Asia's largest lender by assets, so the earnings miss points to pressure on trading-related revenue even as the regional banking sector remains closely watched for profit resilience. The quarterly figures suggest market activity is not fully offsetting other business lines in the period.

In our earlier article on CTOS Digital’s cybersecurity incident, we explained how the service disruption raised concerns about a hit to revenue and profitability, alongside potential damage to customer confidence. We noted the company’s estimate that the breach could reduce net profit by RM12 million and revenue by RM16 million if some services remained unavailable into late October, with further downside risk if disruptions persisted.
