Oportun issuance trust 2026-B nears Fitch ABS ratings for U.S. consumer loan deal
Oportun nears Fitch rating

Oportun is moving ahead with another consumer loan securitization as Fitch says it expects to assign ratings and Rating Outlooks to notes issued by Oportun Issuance Trust 2026-B. The transaction adds to the lender's regular ABS funding activity and is backed by a revolving pool of fixed-rate, fully amortizing secured and unsecured consumer loans.

Highlights

  • Oportun's OPTN 2026-B ABS deal features a pool with a weighted average VantageScore of 653, 77.4% renewal loans, and a 27.2% contract rate.
  • Fitch cites improved default rates post-2022 underwriting changes, with September 2026 delinquencies at 1.3% (60–89 days) and 1.1% (90–119 days) of loan balance.
  • Initial hard credit enhancement for OPTN 2026-B classes ranges from 65.82% for class A to 7.47% for class E, but Fitch flags regulatory risks and possible downgrade if defaults increase.

Collateral profile and rating rationale

As reported by Fitch Ratings, OPTN 2026-B is Oportun's 29th term securitization and its fifth term securitization rated by Fitch. The deal is backed by consumer loans originated by Oportun, Inc., its affiliates or certain third-party originators, with the loans then sold to Oportun, which acts as sponsor of the transaction.

Fitch says the collateral shows consistent quality, with a weighted average VantageScore of 653. Borrowers without a VantageScore account for about 2.2% of the pool, reflecting Oportun's focus on customers with limited or no credit history, while renewal loans make up 77.4% of the pool, above 70.5% in OPTN 2026-A and 66.3% in 2025-D.

The current pool includes 8.36% secured loans, compared with 7.2% for OPTN 2026-A, and carries a weighted average contract rate of 27.2%, slightly above the 27.1% rate for 2026-A. Fitch also says initial hard credit enhancement totals 65.82% for class A, 42.67% for class B, 24.17% for class C, 14.92% for class D and 7.47% for class E notes.

Performance trends and transaction risks

Fitch says Oportun's managed portfolio experienced higher default rates on loans originated in 2021 and 2022, driven by new borrowers sourced through online aggregators and by broader weakness in the unsecured consumer loan market. The ratings agency says underwriting changes introduced in the third quarter of 2022 lead to a material improvement in default rates.

As of September 2026, loans that are 60 to 89 days past due account for 1.3% of total outstanding loan balance, while loans 90 to 119 days past due represent 1.1%. Fitch says PF Servicing, LLC services the receivables and has an acceptable track record, while Systems & Services Technologies, Inc. serves as backup servicer.

Fitch also highlights legal and regulatory uncertainty around true lender status for some partner bank-originated loans involving Pathward, N.A. and Column N.A. It says increased default rates could reduce the credit enhancement available to the notes and potentially lead to downgrades, with sensitivity analysis testing the effects of higher assumed defaults on ratings.

Hainan Rubber’s proposed subordinated perpetual sustainable securities, to be issued by its majority-owned unit Halcyon Agri and guaranteed on a subordinated basis, were assessed with a BBB- rating reflecting their lower ranking in the capital structure and the option to defer coupons. Our publication previously noted Fitch’s view on the company’s leverage and liquidity profile, including reliance on funding access supported by its government-related status, alongside factors that could influence credit metrics over time.
