Europe trails U.S. in AI compute

James Pethokoukis highlights the vast disparity in AI compute between Europe and the U.S. According to Pethokoukis, Europe accounts for just 5 percent of global AI compute, compared with 80 percent for the U.S.

He also notes that the European Union's flagship $230 billion investment plan is spread over multiple years and is significantly smaller than the more than $400 billion U.S. technology firms spent, primarily on expanding AI infrastructure in 2025 alone.

Pethokoukis has previously highlighted large-scale tech investments by major firms. He recently noted that SpaceX invested $15 billion in its Starship project ahead of a potential public offering. In an earlier report, he cited Goldman Sachs's view that 2027 hyperscaler capital expenditure estimates may be overly cautious.
