Gordon Johnson: Only 3 driverless robotaxis active in Austin despite ambitious TSLA targets
Gordon Johnson, CEO / analyst at GLJ Research, criticizes the progress of TSLA's robotaxi rollout in Austin. Johnson points out that although Elon Musk promised 500 driverless robotaxis in Austin by the end of 2025 and had previously committed to 1 million robotaxis by 2020, only 175 vehicles are registered with the Texas DMV, 13 are active, and just 3 are currently driverless, 13 months after the service launched.
He contrasts this with Waymo's performance, which is delivering 500,000 driverless rides per week, and suggests that something has gone very wrong at TSLA in achieving its robotaxi milestones.
Johnson has previously questioned the status of TSLA's autonomous technology following a recent vehicle accident, asking whether Full Self-Driving or autopilot features were in use at the time in a prior article. He has also covered developments in the oil markets, noting that no oil tankers crossed the strait over the weekend while oil prices stayed steady ahead of U.S. market trading in another report. These incidents reflect Johnson's recent focus on operational data and technology progress at major companies.
