Mark Minervini: Hedging strategies can limit gains in a rising market
Hedging may limit rally gains

Mark Minervini, independent trader and educator running his own trading strategy and educational platform, discusses portfolio risk management. He observes that when hedged with an index short against a portfolio of individual long positions, it is often preferable to get stopped out of the short and participate in a market rally with the long positions. According to Minervini, the leverage is typically found in the individual stock gains, where the removal of the hedge can allow for significantly greater returns.

Minervini previously noted holding a handful of long stock positions alongside an SPY short as a hedge during periods of increased volatility among breakout names (Breakout names see increased volatility, Mark Minervini notes). In another update, he reported that most of his long positions, including stocks like PACS, CSX, and HSBC, were at profits with breakeven stops in place (Long positions mainly at profits with breakeven stops, Mark Minervini notes). These earlier posts provide insight into his approach to risk management.
