U.S. data center construction at record high

Joseph Politano reports that U.S. data center construction has reached a new record high, now running at an annualized pace exceeding $68 billion. This figure represents only the construction of data center facilities and does not include the computers installed within them.

According to Politano, spending on U.S. data center construction has increased by 46% over the last year and has risen by 392% since the launch of ChatGPT.

Politano previously reported that U.S. real GDP grew 1.5% annualized in the first quarter of 2026. He noted increases in both consumption and investment during the period. The latest data center construction figures follow these broader economic trends.
