Mohamed A. El-Erian: U.S. CPI data and core inflation in focus before Federal Reserve decision
U.S. CPI and core data shape Fed move

Mohamed A. El-Erian, president at Queens' College, University of Cambridge, highlights the significance of the latest U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) data ahead of the upcoming Federal Reserve rate decision.

According to El-Erian, consensus forecasts call for headline monthly inflation of 0.4 percent (3.4 percent annualized) and core inflation of 0.2 percent (2.4 percent annualized). He stresses that the monthly core reading is especially important, with any result above 0.2 percent likely to have a strong impact on policy expectations.

El-Erian has recently highlighted a steep two-day appreciation in the Japanese yen, leading to speculation about foreign exchange intervention and increased attention on Bank of Japan policy in his article Japanese yen surge fuels speculation of FX intervention. He also noted that rising U.S. mortgage rates are impacting areas beyond housing, with effects spreading to political and social dynamics as detailed in U.S. mortgage costs expanding beyond housing market signals. These observations reflect El-Erian’s continued focus on major economic indicators and their wider implications.
