Beijing now overdependent on exports, Michael Pettis notes
China’s economy at risk from exports

Michael Pettis, economist, professor of finance at Peking University and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, shares an assessment from Xijing Research Institute dean Zhao Jian about China’s shifting economic risks.

According to Zhao, while China was once viewed as overly dependent on real estate, its economy is now at risk due to an increasing reliance on exports. Zhao describes this new paradigm as equally perilous, highlighting a structural challenge facing Beijing.

Pettis has previously highlighted the debate on China’s export surpluses and foreign trade imbalances in discussion with Thorsten Hild. He has also examined issues beyond China, including U.S. and Venezuelan opposition to Chevron’s involvement in Venezuela’s oil reserves. These earlier analyses reflect his continued focus on economic risk factors and global trade dynamics.
