Coldcard users face BTC theft wave

Alex Thorn reports a significant security incident involving Coldcard wallets, where 1,830 BTC have been stolen through a series of seed-entropy thefts. According to Thorn, the attacks occurred in three distinct waves, with more than 30 smaller attack patterns identified and 256 victims coming forward to @glxyresearch. The median loss per victim was 1.1 BTC.

The hunt for the attackers behind these coordinated thefts remains ongoing.

Thorn previously reported on a major security incident where hackers returned 85% of stolen BTC following a Liquid Federation breach, after talks with Blockstream, while keeping $47 million for themselves (see article). In another development covered by Thorn, Silvergate’s CEO confirmed the bank’s voluntary closure after facing intense bank run pressures and political scrutiny from the Biden administration (see article). These events underscore a recent series of high-profile disruptions impacting both digital assets and financial institutions.
