Ben Carlson: Bond market faces first 10-year negative real return since 1976
Bonds post first 10-year negative return

Ben Carlson, director of institutional asset management, CFA, author, investor at Ritholtz Wealth Management, points out that the Agg index, dating back to 1976, is showing the first instance in history where bonds have had a negative 10-year real return on an inflation-adjusted basis.

According to Carlson, this marks the most challenging bond market on record, driven by rates that were too low, a rapid rise in rates, and persistent inflation.

Carlson has recently commented on the concentration of large-cap stocks, noting that the top 10 S&P 500 stocks now account for about 40% of the index. He also analyzed the impact of artificial intelligence, suggesting that AI could add 2% per year to S&P 500 EPS growth but carries a 10% existential human risk. These observations reflect his focus on both equity concentration and technology-driven risks alongside current bond market challenges.
