Share of comfortable seniors has risen, Andrew Biggs notes
Fewer retirees report low incomes

Since 1992, there has been a significant decrease in the proportion of retirees reporting very low incomes, along with a notable rise in seniors describing themselves as financially comfortable, according to data from the 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances.

Andrew Biggs shared these findings, highlighting shifts in self-reported retirement income security among seniors over time.

Biggs previously noted a Congressional Budget Office finding that Social Security's deficit has shrunk, though the program will increase federal debt in coming years, according to recent analysis. He has also cited Penn Wharton research indicating that benefit-reduction Social Security reforms are linked to higher U.S. GDP and lower debt ratios, as reported in a prior article. These findings provide additional context for current trends in retirement income security.
