U.S. deficit almost $2 trillion in 2026

The U.S. government recorded a budget deficit of nearly $2 trillion in the just-ended fiscal year 2026, according to a Treasury statement released on Friday.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, drew attention to the deficit figure, noting that it exceeds 6% of U.S. GDP.

Zandi has recently estimated that the Iran war has cost the average U.S. household nearly $2,000, totaling $265 billion nationwide, according to previous analysis. Earlier, he highlighted concerns about the U.S. labor market after a soft September jobs report and downward revisions to previous months in another report. These comments provide additional context to his latest remarks on fiscal and economic pressures.
