Pakistan tax authority extends return filing deadline to Oct. 31
Pakistan’s tax administration is giving filers more time to submit income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 as pressure builds from businesses over compliance hurdles. The extension pushes the deadline to Oct. 31, 2026, after an earlier move shifted it from Sept. 30 to Oct. 15.
Highlights
- Pakistan's Federal Board of Revenue extends income tax return filing deadline for Tax Year 2026 by two weeks to Oct. 31, 2026.
- Taxpayers face ongoing technical issues with the FBR's online IRIS portal, with business groups and consultants demanding a longer extension due to new requirements.
- The final income tax return form for 2026 was notified only on Sept. 2, 2026, sparking legal debate about sufficient filing time under tax law.
Deadline extension and compliance pressure
As reported by Pakistan Business Recorder, the Federal Board of Revenue, or FBR, on Thursday further extends the deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 to Oct. 31, 2026, granting taxpayers another two weeks to complete submissions. The tax authority says the decision comes in response to requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations. The latest extension covers individuals, businesses and companies seeking to meet their filing obligations within the current tax year framework.
Business groups have been pressing for more time, arguing that many taxpayers are struggling to complete returns within the prescribed schedule. Their calls center on easing compliance and helping filers complete documentation requirements without missing the deadline.
Portal issues and legal timeline concerns
Representatives of the business community say technical problems on the FBR’s online IRIS portal continue to slow the filing process. Karachi’s Korangi Association of Trade and Industry, led by president Sheikh Umer Rehan, is among the groups urging the government and the FBR to allow another month for submissions. In a joint statement, office-bearers say traders, small and medium-sized enterprises, and tax consultants are still facing difficulties linked to new return forms, added disclosure requirements, wealth statement reconciliation and system-related issues on the portal. The IRIS platform, the Integrated Revenue Information System, is Pakistan’s official digital tax management system operated by the FBR.
Some tax experts also argue that the filing window should run until December 2026 because the final return form was notified only on Sept. 2, 2026. Fazal Faraz, a tax expert from Islamabad-Rawalpindi, says the draft Income Tax Return for Tax Year 2026 was circulated through SRO 835(I)/2026 dated May 7, 2026, while the final return form was notified through SRO 1495(I)/2026 on Sept. 2, 2026, leaving taxpayers short of the three-month period they say the law requires.
In our earlier coverage of Pakistan’s Tax Year 2026 income tax return filing deadline debate, we outlined how tax experts and business groups urged the FBR to extend submissions to December 2026 after the final return form was notified on Sept. 2. The report also highlighted persistent IRIS portal glitches and pending extension applications, which stakeholders said were increasing compliance risks for taxpayers.
