Charter approval and planned first-year services

As reported by the National Credit Union Administration, the agency has granted a federal charter and Share Insurance Fund coverage to Accion Opportunity Federal Credit Union in Commerce, California. The charter became effective on October 5, 2026.

NCUA Chairman John Crews says the approval marks an important milestone for the cooperative system and highlights the institution's role in expanding small business lending and serving communities that need greater access to financial services.

Accion Opportunity Federal Credit Union is structured as a multiple common bond credit union with a potential membership of about 70,000 people. It is set up to serve members of the Accion Opportunity Member Alliance and employees of the Accion Opportunity Fund Community Development.

During its first year of operations, the credit union plans to offer consumer and business share accounts, consumer and business share draft accounts, personal loans, business equipment finance loans, and secured and unsecured business loans.

Small business and low-income lending focus

The new institution is chartered specifically to make member business loans. Its stated mission is to provide affordable and accessible financial products to low-income individuals and small business owners, with the aim of supporting financial stability and business growth.

The approval adds a new federally insured lender to the California market at a time when access to smaller-scale business financing remains a key issue for many entrepreneurs and underserved communities. By targeting both household and business banking needs, the credit union broadens the range of mission-driven credit providers operating under federal supervision.
