Morgan Stanley backs dividend-paying quality stocks as U.S. market rotation broadens
A broader rotation in U.S. equities is pushing investors toward quality shares as leadership shifts away from parts of the technology sector. Morgan Stanley says that backdrop favors companies with strong cash flow, solid balance sheets and durable margins, while some of its preferred names also offer dividend income.
Highlights
- Morgan Stanley favors high free-cash-flow, stable-earnings quality stocks as rotation broadens, citing reduced early-cycle leverage and increased AI-driven margin expansion.
- Coca-Cola jumps over 4% after beating Q2 revenue and profit, raises full-year outlook, and remains on Morgan Stanley's overweight dividend list with a 2.41% yield.
- Morgan Stanley projects Gilead Sciences' 2026 Yeztugo sales at $1.1 billion, exceeding guidance, as shares gain nearly 10% and yield reaches 2.43%.
Quality strategy gains traction in shifting market
As reported by CNBC, Morgan Stanley chief U.S. equity strategist Mike Wilson says the current move into quality stocks reflects a classic mid-cycle transition as the business cycle matures. In a note Monday, he says future margin expansion is likely to depend less on early-cycle operating leverage and more on AI adoption, reinforcing the firm's preference for high free-cash-flow yield, low earnings variability, strong balance sheets and high margins. That view comes as the Dow Jones Industrial Average rises while the Nasdaq Composite slips, and as the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, XLK, falls to its lowest level since May 7. Health care stocks and financials move higher, and Wilson says the quality rotation should help support broader index resilience even if near-term consolidation continues.
Wilson also says downside toward 7,000 on the S&P 500 remains possible if the war continues to escalate or if the Federal Reserve unexpectedly raises rates this week. Even so, he tells CNBC's "Squawk Box" that the 7,000 level will be defended and that the benchmark should reach 8,000 by year end.
Dividend names on Morgan Stanley's overweight list
Coca-Cola is among the dividend-paying stocks highlighted by the firm's screen, with a yield of 2.41%. Its shares jump more than 4% Tuesday after the company beats on revenue and profit for the second quarter and raises its full-year outlook, while Morgan Stanley had reiterated its overweight rating in June.Colgate-Palmolive, which yields 2.26%, also makes the list as another consumer staples name favored by the bank. Morgan Stanley reiterates its overweight rating and top-pick status for the stock in May, saying the company's long-term outlook is improving, while the shares are up about 18% so far in 2026.
SLB, the oilfield services group, is also included after rising more than 30% in 2026 and offering a 2.35% dividend yield. The company recently posts second-quarter earnings and revenue above expectations, saying stronger offshore drilling activity offsets disruptions in the Middle East.
Gilead Sciences rounds out the group, with a dividend yield of 2.43% and a share gain of almost 10% this year. Morgan Stanley says earlier this month that it expects 2026 sales of Gilead's HIV-prevention shot Yeztugo to reach $1.1 billion, above both the $1.05 billion consensus estimate and the company's $1 billion guidance, ahead of results due next week.
Wolfe Research’s earnings-resilience screen was the focus of our earlier coverage, highlighting stocks that beat expectations, showed constructive post-results price action, and saw upward 2026 EPS revisions as better-positioned for a choppy market. We also noted that war-related oil risks and intensifying scrutiny of Big Tech AI capex were contributing to uneven trading and widening single-stock dispersion within the S&P 500.
