IBM eyes $240 as AI updates and Hot Chips support recovery
A break above $240 could open the way toward the 50-day SMA.

IBM continues to hold important support at $230.90 following its recent correction, although buyers have yet to push the stock back toward $240. Fresh developments in agentic AI and sovereign AI are supporting the fundamental backdrop ahead of Hot Chips 2026.

IBM released Db2 Genius Hub 1.1.4, expanding the use of agentic AI in database management. The new version can automate support-ticket workflows, analyze configurations and performance, track AI usage and run agentic workflows through Microsoft Azure AI Foundry using Anthropic Claude models.

IBM also expanded Sovereign Core through an integration with Duality Technologies. The solution allows organizations to run AI and analytics workloads across distributed confidential data without moving or exposing the underlying information. It is aimed primarily at government agencies, financial institutions, healthcare companies and other industries with strict data-sovereignty requirements.

A break above $240 could open the way toward 50 SMA

The scenario from the previous analysis has played out only partially. IBM stock held support at $230.90, but buyers have yet to reach resistance at $240.

For today’s session, $240 becomes the key level. If buyers can break above it and hold there, the next obstacle will be $244.

Beyond that, the 50-day SMA near $248 represents a more significant technical barrier. A break above $240 would therefore improve the short-term structure and open more room for the recovery to extend.

The bearish scenario would return to focus if IBM loses $230.90. In that case, the stock could continue lower toward the May 20 gap near $225.

Hot Chips puts IBM’s next-generation processors in focus

On August 24, IBM’s Christian Zoellin is scheduled to present “The Future IBM Z & LinuxONE Processor and AI Inference Acceleration Chipset” during the first CPU session at Hot Chips 2026.

The coming sessions could therefore be shaped by two factors: the technical battle around $240 and expectations ahead of Hot Chips. A decisive break above resistance would open the way first toward $244 and then the 50-day SMA near $248, while a move below $230.90 would shift the balance back in favor of sellers.
