ADSK retreats nearly 5% as technical overbought signals and sharp downside gap pressure price
Autodesk slides 4.63% today after earnings

Autodesk Inc (ADSK) slid 4.63% after recent earnings results and new guidance updates, even as strong second-quarter performance, increased billings outlook, and a recent acquisition set a fundamentally positive backdrop. The move stands in contrast to ongoing bullish momentum on short-, medium-, and long-term technical measures, with price action testing support after a sharp downside gap.

Earnings and outlook beat fail to lift shares amid sustained selling

Autodesk Inc reported second-quarter fiscal 2027 results that exceeded analyst expectations, with earnings of $3.30 per share and revenue of $2.05 billion. The company raised its full-year outlook for billings and revenue, and completed the acquisition of MaintainX in August. Autodesk also disclosed the repurchase of approximately 2.1 million shares for $453 million and posted free cash flow of $561 million, though price action has remained under broader selling pressure.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees the recent drop in Autodesk Inc as a clear signal of underlying market skepticism, despite strong earnings and revenue growth. He believes persistent selling pressure, overbought indicators, and a bearish longer-term trend expose vulnerabilities in the technical setup. Share buybacks and acquisition news have failed to stabilize sentiment or reverse downside momentum after the earnings gap. Kharitonov warns the elevated RSI and CCI levels heighten the risk of a sharper correction if support breaks. "A move below $253.72 could trigger accelerated losses, so traders should tread carefully until genuine reversal signals appear," he says.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, highlights Autodesk’s strong Q2 results, upward revisions in guidance, and the MaintainX acquisition as solidifying its growth narrative. He notes that despite a temporary price pullback, the bullish structure remains intact thanks to robust fundamentals and consistent buyback activity. Karapetjanc believes broad selling pressure is short lived and sees potential for further upward movement once technical resistance at $266.35 clears. "With revenue momentum and enhanced fundamentals, I expect Autodesk to break higher toward $273.53 in the near future," he says.
Jainam Mehta, market strategist, observes that Autodesk’s technical indicators show bullish positioning above key moving averages, but also hint at stretched momentum. He sees today’s downside gap and overbought signals as a setup for possible mean reversion or a short-term pause, especially given heightened volatility. "A breakout above $266.35 offers a tactical opportunity, yet a retracement toward the $253.72 support cannot be ruled out this week," he notes.

Overbought conditions persist as bullish momentum meets resistance

Autodesk is trading above its 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages ($249, $224.31, and $248.64), signaling bullish momentum across short-, medium-, and long-term timeframes. The nearest resistance is at $266.35, with support at $253.72. The moving average alignment remains bearish in the longer-term context. Momentum readings are positive, as the MACD and ADX both indicate continued buying interest. However, multiple overbought signals are present: the RSI at 69.84, Stochastic RSI at 86.59, and CCI at 202.84 all point to elevated conditions. Bull/Bear Power at 19.11 confirms buyers dominate intraday momentum, also flagged as overbought. The Awesome Oscillator signal is neutral. After a downside gap of about $9.20 (-3.4%) from the prior close, today’s price sits near the daily low with intraday volatility at 4.98%. The overall tone is pressured after the open, suggesting stretched short-term momentum.

Earlier, analysts noted that Autodesk shares maintained a bullish technical posture amid ongoing momentum and anticipation around earnings events. The latest price reaction adds a layer of caution, as the stock consolidates near key support with heightened volatility, making $266.35 a critical resistance level to watch for potential breakout confirmation in the coming sessions.
