IBM consolidates below $242 as historically weak September begins
IBM stock played out the bullish scenario outlined earlier, rising toward $240 after breaking above $230.90. However, weaker sentiment across the technology sector prevented the stock from establishing itself above this area and led to the formation of a new trading range.
IBM is launching the debut episode of Bob TV, focused on its enterprise AI assistant IBM Bob and its use in software development, modernization and maintenance. The company continues to expand its AI strategy beyond watsonx, with a growing emphasis on the practical integration of AI agents into developer workflows.
At the same time, the broader backdrop for the technology sector remains more cautious. As September begins, investors are weighing higher bond yields, the possibility of a more restrictive Fed policy stance and the month’s historically elevated volatility. These factors could limit further re-rating of technology stocks even as the underlying AI story remains strong.

IBM needs a $242 breakout to target $255.50
IBM stock fully played out the bullish setup outlined earlier. After breaking above $230.90, the price continued toward the $240 target, but buyers failed to establish the stock above this area.
As a result, a new $227.30–$242 trading range has formed. A sustained move beyond either boundary will likely determine the next short-term direction.
A break above $242 would open the way toward the nearest resistance at $245. Clearing this level could accelerate the advance toward $255.50, where an unfilled price gap from June 23, 2026 remains.
The bearish case would become relevant if the stock establishes itself below $227.30. In that case, the probability of a deeper correction toward $212 would increase significantly.

September seasonality adds pressure to IBM
Fresh Nasdaq Dorsey Wright data confirms that September has historically been one of the weakest months for U.S. stocks. Since 1958, the S&P 500 has lost an average of 1.1% in September, which is also the only month with a negative median return.
Over the past six years, the index has declined in four Septembers, posting an average return of roughly -2.9%.
For IBM, this seasonal backdrop increases the importance of the $227.30–$242 range. A weak September environment could add to selling pressure if the lower boundary breaks.
