2027 portfolio selection and performance backdrop
As reported by CNBC, Morgan Stanley has refreshed its Vintage Values list of stocks to hold for 12 months after the bank’s 2026 portfolio returned 32.12% from Sept. 9, 2025 to Sept. 11, 2026, compared with nearly 19% for the S&P 500.To build the 2027 list, Morgan Stanley strategists asked the firm’s North America analysts for their top recommendation for a one-year buy-and-hold horizon, producing more than 50 names before narrowing the group to 15 stocks. Michelle Weaver, the bank’s equity strategist, says the process incorporates company fundamentals, quantitative analysis, macro exposure, industry positioning, valuation and risk-reward.
Only Amazon, McKesson and Visa appear on both the 2026 and 2027 Vintage Values lists. Other companies included for 2027 are Alphabet, Apple, Coca-Cola, Dynatrace, Eli Lilly, Equinix and Williams Companies.
Quality tilt shapes market positioning
The 2027 list is tilted toward quality, large-cap and growth stocks, with 60% of the selections in the top two quality tiers, versus 56% for the S&P 500. Morgan Stanley also says that this quality bias makes the new roster more expensive than the broader market on most valuation measures.Weaver says the 2027 portfolio has an anti-momentum tilt, meaning the stock selections are not simply recent winners but names that analysts identify for their underlying company-specific drivers. That approach suggests the firm is emphasizing bottom-up conviction over short-term market trends as it positions the list for the next 12 months.
In our earlier analysis of the S&P 500 (SPX), we noted that the index was holding above key moving averages, keeping the broader uptrend intact even as market breadth weakened and liquidity strains increased. The piece also flagged overbought technical readings and a near-term consolidation range, warning that thinner order-book resilience could amplify volatility if support levels break.
