Meta market cap nears $2 trillion after shares surge 36% in a month
Meta Platforms shares have surged 36% since the start of September following the launch of its Muse personal AI assistant. The rally has pushed the company's market capitalization close to $2 trillion and could mark its best monthly stock performance since July 2013.
According to TradingView, Meta shares rose as much as 0.4% in premarket trading on Friday and were on track for a third consecutive session of gains. The stock needs to rise by roughly another 1% for Meta's market capitalization to reach $2 trillion.

The main driver of the September rally has been Muse, which quickly climbed to the top of app rankings. The successful launch has eased investor concerns over whether Meta can generate returns from its multibillion-dollar spending on artificial intelligence.
Muse changes investor view of Meta's AI strategy
Less than six weeks ago, Meta shares were down 18% for the year following weak revenue guidance and amid legal risks facing its social media business. As of August 18, the company ranked among the 50 worst-performing stocks in the S&P 500.
Since then, the shares have gained 43%, making Meta the third-best performer in the index. The recovery began after the company agreed to pay up to $18 billion to settle litigation over the potential harm of social media to teenagers.
New products powered by Muse provided further momentum. Meta struck partnerships with Instacart owner Maplebear and travel platform Expedia, while also unveiling the compact Muse Charm device and versions of its smart glasses without cameras.
However, the scale of investment remains one of the main risks. Meta's capital expenditures are expected to reach nearly $140 billion in 2026, up from around $70 billion a year earlier, and could rise to $197 billion in 2027 and $215 billion in 2028.
AI spending continues to weigh on cash flow
After generating $46 billion in free cash flow in 2025, analysts expect Meta to post negative free cash flow of $6.4 billion this year and $29.2 billion in 2027. This is increasing pressure on the company's new AI products to generate revenue.
According to analyst consensus estimates, Meta's revenue could rise 26% to $254 billion in 2026, while net income could increase 33% to $80.6 billion. Growth in those metrics is expected to slow to 20% and 9%, respectively, next year.
At the same time, Meta continues to search for a mass-market format for augmented and virtual reality devices. The company is focusing on more compact glasses and AI integration, seeking to overcome a key limitation of previous generations of devices: consumers' reluctance to wear bulky VR headsets for extended periods.
Earlier, we reported that Meta continued cutting jobs after a U.S. court rejected an attempt to halt layoffs in a case involving alleged AI bias. The legal dispute did not result in a suspension of the company's workforce reductions.
