Stocks shift after earnings

Several U.S. stocks are moving in extended trading as investors react to a fresh round of quarterly earnings and a new takeover announcement. The biggest after-hours moves include declines for Interactive Brokers and J.B. Hunt, while Alcoa and Varonis Systems trade higher on stronger catalysts.

Highlights

  • Interactive Brokers drops 1% after posting third-quarter adjusted earnings of 67 cents per share, missing analyst estimates, despite revenue of $1.91 billion above forecasts.
  • J.B. Hunt Transport Services falls over 2% after reporting third-quarter earnings of $1.82 per share, below the expected $1.89, while revenue exceeds forecasts at $3.68 billion.
  • Varonis Systems jumps more than 2% after Proofpoint announces a $6.3 billion all-cash acquisition, expected to close in the first half of 2027.

After-hours moves tied to earnings and deal news

As reported by CNBC, Interactive Brokers shares fall 1% in after-hours trading after the electronic broker posts third-quarter adjusted earnings of 67 cents a share, missing the 68 cents expected by analysts surveyed by LSEG. Revenue beats forecasts at $1.91 billion, compared with the consensus estimate of $1.87 billion.

J.B. Hunt Transport Services sheds more than 2% after its latest quarterly results. The company earns $1.82 per share for the third quarter, below the $1.89 analysts expect, while revenue comes in above forecasts at $3.68 billion versus the expected $3.57 billion.

Varonis Systems gains more than 2% after Proofpoint announces plans to acquire the artificial intelligence security company in an all-cash transaction valued at about $6.3 billion. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027.

Alcoa advances 2% after reporting third-quarter earnings above expectations. The aluminum producer posts earnings of $1.82 per share, excluding certain items, ahead of the $1.47 expected by analysts, according to LSEG, although revenue of $3.70 billion is below the anticipated $3.79 billion.

Mixed signals for investors across sectors

The after-hours moves show that investors continue to weigh profit performance against revenue trends, with earnings misses pressuring shares even when sales come in ahead of expectations. That pattern is visible in both Interactive Brokers and J.B. Hunt, where revenue outperformance does not offset weaker-than-expected per-share results.

At the same time, stronger earnings execution and strategic deal activity are supporting gains in other names. Alcoa benefits from a clear earnings beat, while Varonis Systems draws support from takeover terms that put a multibillion-dollar value on the cybersecurity company.

In our earlier article on Q3 cybersecurity funding and dealmaking, we noted that investor appetite stayed strong as larger late-stage rounds lifted total capital raised even while the number of transactions declined. We also highlighted how AI-oriented and identity security startups led fundraising, alongside a pickup in consolidation through multibillion-dollar acquisitions that underscored strategic demand for cybersecurity assets.
