Upgrade follows steep stock retreat
As reported by CNBC, Citizens upgraded J.B. Hunt Transport Services to market outperform from market perform and set a $300 price target, implying about 27% upside from Wednesday's close.Analyst Jeff Kauffman says the upgrade is driven by an 18.3% pullback in JBHT shares since the company's strong second-quarter 2026 earnings release in July. In a note to clients on Thursday, he says the decline has brought the stock to a more attractive valuation level at 110% of the S&P 500 price-to-earnings multiple on Citizens' 2027 earnings per share estimate.
J.B. Hunt shares plunged 13% on Wednesday after the company warned investors that it foresees up to a 10% quarter-over-quarter earnings decline. The stock is down more than 11% over the past three months.
Cost pressures weigh on trucking outlook
CFO Brad Delco attributes the expected earnings hit to higher costs tied to recruiting, advertising, onboarding, training and sign-on bonuses. Kauffman says those pressures are partly industry-wide, citing a 37.3% increase in on-highway diesel prices since the July 4 weekend, while also noting that J.B. Hunt faces a more specific challenge in intermodal drayage, where driver shortages appear especially tight.Citizens expects those added costs to weigh on 2026 earnings per share in the short term, but says surcharges and pricing should eventually offset the pressure. That view broadly matches Wall Street sentiment, with 14 of the 25 analysts covering J.B. Hunt rating the stock a buy or strong buy, according to LSEG data.

The article also noted that elevated fuel costs were increasing pressure across trucking and rail, with carriers such as J.B. Hunt warning that volatile energy markets and rising operating expenses could squeeze margins heading into peak seasonal demand.
