IBM stock forecast: Can October 21 earnings unlock further upside?
IBM faces elevated gap risk on October 21

IBM has recovered from its recent pullback, but the next move is becoming harder to call. The October 21 earnings report could quickly change the balance between buyers and sellers.

As reported by Yahoo Finance, the estimated earnings per share will be around $2.86 against revenues of $16.81 billion. Software operations and especially that of Red Hat will be under scrutiny, as well as the demand for IBM’s artificial intelligence products.

Sharp price gaps could disrupt the current recovery setup

IBM stock followed the scenario outlined previously. The price held near $220, reached the first target at $227.50 and then extended the recovery toward the next objective at $242.

With earnings due on October 21, however, carrying short-term positions overnight becomes considerably more risky. A large post-earnings gap could render nearby technical levels irrelevant almost immediately.

For that reason, opening fresh positions just before the report offers a poor risk-reward setup for short-term traders.

The technical picture should become clearer only after the market has absorbed IBM’s third-quarter results and established an initial post-earnings range.

Post-earnings price gaps could threaten both long and short positions

Because IBM reports after the closing bell, the stock could open the following session sharply higher or lower before traders have an opportunity to react.

That creates risk on both sides of the market. A sizeable gap can produce substantial losses for long positions just as easily as it can squeeze traders holding shorts.

Waiting for the earnings release and the market’s first reaction may therefore offer a cleaner setup than trying to anticipate the move in advance. Until then, trading risk around IBM remains unusually high.
