Target rolls out holiday affordability push with luxury-style goods and AI shopping tool
Target’s luxe holiday deals

As households watch spending amid higher living costs, Target is shaping its holiday season around lower-priced products with a more premium feel. The retailer is pairing that strategy with thousands of new seasonal items, an expanded toy lineup and promotional offers running from early November through Dec. 24.

Highlights

  • Target launches 8,000 new holiday items—over half exclusive—including 'luxe for less' goods with cashmere sweaters from $45 and faux fur throws for $30.
  • Target adds 3,000 new Fun101 toy, tech, gadget, and fandom items, declaring toys a 'must-win' category under Chief Merchandising Officer Cara Sylvester.
  • Target introduces the 'Ask Target' AI shopping tool and schedules daily holiday deals from Nov. 1–Dec. 24, with early Black Friday promotions from Nov. 5–7.

Holiday range and retail strategy

As reported by Reuters, Target said in a press release that it will introduce 8,000 new items for the holidays, with more than half exclusive to the retailer. The seasonal assortment includes what it calls “luxe for less” products such as cashmere sweaters priced from $45 and faux fur throws for $30.

Toys remain a priority for the company as it adds 3,000 new items across its Fun101 assortment of toys, tech, gadgets and fandom merchandise. Chief Merchandising Officer Cara Sylvester said at an event in New York on Tuesday that the category is a “must-win” area for the retailer.

Under CEO Michael Fiddelke, who takes over the role in February, Target is working to regain the blend of style and affordability that helped earn it the “Tar-zhay” nickname among shoppers.

Consumer pressure and holiday demand

Target's holiday plan comes as retailers try to appeal to shoppers who still want premium-looking products but are becoming more selective as prices rise. Researchers at NielsenIQ earlier this year found that consumers continue to show interest in luxury items while making more careful buying decisions.

The company is also adding “Ask Target,” an AI chat feature designed to help customers find suitable items during the holiday shopping season. Early Black Friday deals are set for Nov. 5 to 7, and the retailer says it will run a daily “deal of the day” from Nov. 1 through Dec. 24.

We previously reported on a pre-holiday surge in U.S. toy prices, as tariffs on China-made goods and higher oil-, commodity-, and shipping-related costs pushed up shelf prices faster than many other categories. That earlier analysis also noted that manufacturers such as Mattel and Hasbro were seeing margin pressure, meaning elevated costs could continue to influence what consumers pay during the holiday season.
