Nasdaq rally shows technical strain near record high
Nasdaq faces technical strain

The Nasdaq Composite remains close to its record peak, but the index has traded sideways for months as momentum weakens. Recent chart signals point to pressure on key support levels, highlighting downside risks if buyers fail to regain short-term moving averages.

Highlights

  • Nasdaq closed Friday at 25,955.34, falling below its 50-day (26,599) and 100-day (26,254) moving averages, indicating increasing technical vulnerability.
  • The index risks breaching the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement at 26,063 and the Sept. 16 low at 25,802.96, with key support clustering at 25,000 if declines continue.
  • A drop to 25,000 would put the Nasdaq more than 9% below its record close, signaling a major potential sentiment shift even as the index remains near historic highs.

Technical levels shape the next move

As reported by Reuters, technical analysis suggests the Nasdaq is testing an increasingly fragile position after ending Friday at 25,955.34, below both its 50-day and 100-day moving averages near 26,599 and 26,254.

The index is also in danger of slipping below the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement of the March-to-October advance at 26,063 and the Sept. 16 low at 25,802.96, based on LSEG data. Those levels are closely watched because the Nasdaq held above them during the mid-October selloff.

If the decline extends, market watchers are likely to focus on a rising weekly Gann line near 25,500. Below that, a broader cluster of longer-term support gathers around 25,000, including the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement of the March-to-October rally, the June low and the 200-day moving average.

Range-bound trading leaves market at inflection point

A move toward 25,000 would leave the Nasdaq down a little more than 9% from its record close, underlining how quickly sentiment could shift even with the index still near historic highs.

On the upside, buyers first need to recover the 100-day and 50-day moving averages before attention turns to last Wednesday's intraday high of 26,779. If momentum improves further, traders may then target the June 1 intraday high at 27,190 ahead of the October record peak.

Technical analysis maps potential support and resistance using past price action, moving averages and tools such as Fibonacci retracements. In the current setup, those indicators show the technology-heavy index caught in a prolonged trading range, with the next break likely to determine whether the rally resumes or loses further ground.

Our earlier coverage of the Nasdaq 100’s pullback highlighted how the index slid below its 20-day and 50-day moving averages after a hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation reading, even as Treasury yields fell—an unusual mix that pointed to a shift in risk sentiment. The analysis also flagged key levels for traders, with near-term support around 28,526 and the longer-term bullish structure still supported by the 200-day moving average.
