Japan Exchange Group begins Topix overhaul as index review may cut more than one-third of constituents
Topix index major shake-up

A sweeping revision of Japan’s benchmark equity index takes effect on Friday, marking the first major reshuffle of the Topix under Japan Exchange Group’s new framework. The changes could remove about 700 stocks and reduce the index to fewer than 1,000 members while widening eligibility to some smaller and growth-oriented listings.

Highlights

  • Japan Exchange Group begins the initial Topix review on Friday, starting to gradually reduce weighting of stocks marked for removal.
  • The Topix overhaul may cut more than one-third of constituents, potentially dropping about 700 names and reducing members to fewer than 1,000.
  • The revamp broadens index eligibility to smaller and growth companies meeting liquidity requirements and introduces annual reshuffles starting October 2028.

Index review starts with phased stock weighting cuts

As reported by Bloomberg, the initial Topix review starts on Friday with the weighting of stocks marked for removal set to decline gradually rather than being eliminated at once.

The process is part of the largest overhaul in the benchmark’s history and may shrink the number of constituents by more than one-third. If the projected changes are completed, the index would lose about 700 names and end up with fewer than 1,000 members.

Broader eligibility reshapes market access

The revamp also extends index eligibility to market segments aimed at smaller companies and growth firms, provided they meet requirements including liquidity.

Japan Exchange Group is also setting up a recurring review cycle, with annual reshuffles due to begin from October 2028. The new structure could alter investor exposure across Japan’s equity market by reducing legacy constituents and opening the benchmark to a wider pool of qualifying companies.

Our recent DAX price analysis highlighted the index holding above key moving averages and maintaining a bullish technical structure, supported by steady buyer demand for its components. We also pointed to key support and resistance levels and noted that, after a prior spell of downside pressure, the move back above major averages signaled a shift in sentiment and a potential test of higher levels if momentum persisted.
