His family emigrated to the United States in 1976, where he pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He began his career as an engineer but soon shifted into investment banking, holding senior positions at firms such as Bankers Trust, Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, and Credit Suisse First Boston. In 1995, Knaster returned to Russia to serve as the CEO of Alfa-Bank, where he significantly expanded its operations. In 2004, he founded Pamplona Capital Management, which quickly grew with backing from the Alfa Group, among other investors. Pamplona Capital has diversified across private equity, hedge funds, and fund-of-funds management.
