John Phelan, born in 1964, is an accomplished investor and businessman, most notably the co-founder and Chief Investment Officer of MSD Capital and MSD Partners. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from Southern Methodist University, graduating cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He later received an MBA from Harvard Business School. Phelan began his career in investment banking at Goldman Sachs, where he worked in real estate investment banking services. Following his time at Goldman, he became Vice President at the Equity Group, managing acquisitions for the Zell-Merrill Lynch Real Estate Opportunity Funds. Before co-founding MSD Capital, he was a Principal at ESL Partners, where he played a significant role in growing the firm’s assets under management from $50 million to over $2 billion. Beyond his investment work, Phelan is a philanthropist and serves on several prestigious boards, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory​
