Oberle joins the British bank from JPMorgan Chase and will be responsible for private equity relationships in the Americas. He will report to Jean-François Astier, who heads the group on a global level.

It's worth noting that Barclays is hiring Oberle at a time when it is making maximum efforts to streamline its operations, including possible job cuts in its domestic retail division and a comprehensive review of investment banking performance, Reuters reported.

Barclays CEO Coimbatore Sundararajan Venkatakrishnan has appointed a number of new executives this year but has also made several key layoffs.

Oberlie left JPMorgan a few months after Marco Caggiano, the firm's senior banker, left to join Morgan Stanley as Vice Chairman of Mergers and Acquisitions.

Major U.S. banks have been downsizing significantly in recent years as they adapt to the changing financial landscape.
